Interactive Brokers Review (2025) – Is IBKR the Best Broker Out There?

  • Post category:Money

Looking for a broker that lets you invest globally without bleeding money on fees? Interactive Brokers might just be your best bet. From fractional trading of US ETFs to access to global markets, IBKR caters to both casual and seasoned traders alike.

In this Interactive Brokers review, I’ll break down IBKR in a way that actually matters – fees, account types, paltforms, products, and the real-life experience of using it. Skip the corporate jargon; get the insights that help you decide if IBKR is right for you.

What is Interactive Brokers?

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is one of the largest and most established online brokerages in the world. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in the U.S., it has grown into a global platform that gives everyday investors access to the same markets, tools, and pricing that professional traders use.

At its core, IBKR is a gateway to investing in over 150 markets worldwide – from Singapore stocks to U.S. ETFs, options, futures, and even bonds and forex. Unlike many local brokers that limit you to one region, IBKR is built for people who want global exposure without opening multiple accounts.

But IBKR isn’t just about scale. It’s known for two things that make it stand out:

  • Low costs: Historically, IBKR has built its reputation on razor-thin trading commissions compared to traditional brokers
  • Advanced access: It’s widely seen as a “pro-level” broker – packed with tools, research, and order types that go beyond what casual trading apps usually offer

Account Types & Minimums

Opening an account with Interactive Brokers is pretty straightforward.

  • Types of accounts:
    • Individual – the standard account most retail investors use
    • Joint – for those investing with couples or partners
    • Corporate/Trust – if you’re investing under a business entity or trust
  • Cash vs margin:
    • Cash account – you can only trade with the money you’ve funded
    • Margin account – you can borrow against your portfolio to leverage trades. Handy for experienced traders, completely avoid for beginners
  • Minimum deposit: There’s no minimum deposit anymore

For most investors starting out, just stick with an individual cash account.

Fees & Pricing

TL;DR:

  • Investing in U.S. Market Only: Go with IBKR Lite – commission-free trading on U.S. stocks and ETFs. Simple, cost-effective, no fuss
  • Investing in Global Market / CSPX + QQQM for most SG investors: Choose IBKR Pro and set to Tiered Pricing – still very low fees, gives access to U.S. and global markets, plus advanced trading tools

Interactive Brokers offers two main pricing structures: IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro. Choosing the right one depends on your investment and trading activity.

IBKR Lite

  • Only for retail investors looking to invest in the U.S. market only
  • Offers commission free trading, no platform fees and settlement fees (BIG yay!)
  • Available for U.S. and Singapore retail investors only. But not available in all regions, so please check for your country of residence
  • Limited advanced features compared to IBKR Pro

IBKR Pro

  • Choose between fixed or tiered pricing models for commissions:
    • Fixed Pricing: $0.005 per share with a $1 minimum and 1% maximum per trade
    • Tiered Pricing: Rates range from $0.0005-0.0035 per share, depending on monthly trading volume, with $0.35 minimum and 1% maximum per trade
  • Best for investors seeking access to global markets beyond the U.S., including European, Asian and emerging markets
  • Offers professional-grade tools and features such as advanced charting, algorithmic trading options etc.
  • SmartRouting Technology which searches for the best available prices across exchanges to provide better execution prices
  • Competitive margin rates, starting at the benchmark rate plus 1.5% for the first $100k borrowed

Pro Tip: If you’re using IBKR Pro, the default setting is Fixed Pricing. Remember to switch to Tiered Pricing as it offers lower commissions, especially if each of your trades are below S$10k (which I believe are most of us).

IBKR Platform & Tools: What You Actually Use

Interactive Brokers isn’t just about low fees – the platform and tools make a huge difference once you actually start investing. Here’s how I personally use it:

1. IBKR Mobile App

For me, 99% of my trading happens here. I usually check in at night (Singapore time), when US markets are open, often lying in bed. The app lets me do everything I want as a casual investor – from placing trades to checking my portfolio, and even depositing funds. It covers everything you’ll ever need at your fingertips.

2. IBKR Desktop App

IBKR recently made a new desktop app called IBKR Desktop, it’s a stripped down and cleaner version of the Trader Workstation. I’ve heard mixed opinions from users, but most seem to repel away from this especially if they’re already used to the Trader Workstation.

If you are a buy-and-hold or casual investor, you can just stick with the IBKR Mobile App.

3. Trader Workstation (TWS)

I don’t use it personally, and it’s not generally not recommended at all for casual investors.

TWS is feature rich and highly customizable for the day-traders and professionals trading with large volumes or need advanced charting, algo trading, and risk management. I’ve heard from other users is that it takes time to get used to the “very ugly” layout, but it’s worth the pain if you’re an advanced investor and plan to use this in the long run.

4. Research & Analysis Tools

IBKR has market news, analyst rating, and global stock/ ETF data built in. I don’t use everything as I rely on my own due diligence and other research sources, but having this is a plus point.

Products You Can Trade

What immediately drew me to Interactive Brokers was the sheer range of markets and products I could access from one account. Even as a casual investor who only purchases a couple of individual stocks and ETFs, I appreciate that IBKR doesn’t limit me.

Fractional trading is also a huge plus with IBKR. Anyone can start with as little as $1 for stocks and ETFs (including CSPX). This means you don’t need huge capital to diversify or experiment with global products, and IBKR currently supports fractional trading for ~19.2k eligible U.S., Canadian and European stocks and ETFs.

Beyond stocks and ETFs, IBKR offers options, futures, bonds, forex and cryptocurrency – all from the same account. I don’t use them personally, but it’s comforting to know I can explore them later without setting up a separate brokerage.

Funding, Currency Conversion and Withdrawals

Funding your IBKR account

1. PayNow (Instant SGD Deposits)

For Singapore investors, funding your IBKR account is straightforward – simply deposit SGD using PayNow (recommended). Once you’ve set up a deposit notification in the IBKR, you can transfer funds via your bank’s PayNow feature. Transfers are typically reflected in your account within an hour. Do note that if this is your first deposit, if may take up to a few hours.

2. Bank Wire transfer (SGD or USD)

You can also fund your IBKR account through a bank wire transfer – taking 1-2 business days.

3. eGIRO (Recurring SGD Deposits)

Alternatively, you can set up eGIRO instruction to allow for automated, recurring SGD deposits. This method is useful for those planning to dollar-cost average. The setup is straightforward and can be completed online through your bank’s portal.

4. Wise (International Transfers)

If you’re transferring funds overseas, Wise offers a cost-effective solution. By linking your Wise account to IBKR, you can initiate transfers that typically take 1-2 business days to reflect in your bank account.

Currency conversion

Interactive Brokers offers super competitive exchange rates with tight spreads. You can either:

  • Automatic Conversion: Convert currencies when you place a trade. Convenient for small amounts, with a typical fee around 0.03%
  • Manual Conversion: You convert yourself via the platform. Cheaper for larger aunts, with fees starting at $2 or 0.002% of the transaction

Pro Tip: For trades under US$6.5k (S$8.3k), auto conversation is generally cheaper due to lower fee structure. For amounts exceeding this threshold, manual conversion becomes more cost-effective.

Withdrawals

IBKR provides one free withdrawal per month. Subsequent withdrawals within the same month incur a fee of USD 10. Withdrawals can be made via wire transfer or GIRO into your Singapore bank account. Processing times typically range from 1 to 3 business days.

If you’re a long-term investor, this shouldn’t impact you at all.

Customer Support

While I have rarely have the need to use it, customer support is an important area to consider — especially if you’re new to investing or want the reassurance that help is available when you need it.

Interactive Brokers offers several ways to get help:

  • Live Chat – Available through the website and app, useful for quick questions
  • Phone Support – You can reach IBKR directly, though wait times vary depending on the time of day
  • Email Tickets – Best for less urgent issues that need detailed responses

Pro Tip: Check IBKR Support first – many common questions (account setup, trading rules, fees) are already answered in a clear, step-by-step way

From my own experience, support quality is solid. You’ll usually get accurate, knowledgeable answers, but don’t expect the hand-holding style you might find with newer investing apps.

Safety & Reliability

Interactive Brokers is one of the most reputable brokers globally, trusted by millions of investors since 1978. For Singaporean users, accounts are under IBKR SG, which is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) – one of the world’s most stringent financial regulators.

Clients funds are segregated from the firm’s operating capital, giving an extra layer of protection. In the rare event of the broker insolvency, your funds are shielded. Clients also get an extra layer of protection with accounts being covered by SIPC insurance up to $500,000 (including $250,000 cash) if the broker-dealer fails. Similar protections apply in other regions, like the FSCS in the UK.

On top of that, IBKR offers robust security features: two-factor authentication (2FA), automatic logoff, device management, and encryption on all transactions. From a reliability standpoint, their platform uptime is strong, meaning you can generally trade when the markets are open without worrying about outages.

Pro tip: Always enable 2FA on your account and register your devices – it adds a small step but dramatically improves account safety.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Super low fees: Especially with IBKR Lite for US markets or IBKR Prod for global exposure. Great for both casual and active investors
  • Fractional trading: Makes investing in high-priced ETFs like CSPX and QQQM accessible even with small amounts
  • Mobile app convenience: Perfect for late-night trades or quick portfolio checks
  • Wide product range: Stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, futures – you name it. Even if you’re a casual investor, the breadth is reassuring
  • Competitive currency conversion: One of the best in the industry with super tight spreads

Cons

  • Desktop TWS can overwhelm: Most casual investors won’t need it, and it’s a steep learning curve
  • Customer support: Helpful, but sometimes not as instant as more retail-focused platforms

Conclusion

No matter whether you’re a new investor just starting out or an experienced trader looking for global exposure, Interactive Brokers has a place for you. With ultra-low fees, a wide range of tradable products, and a strong track record of reliability, IBKR scales with your investing journey.

It’s not just about access – it’s about having a broker that grows with you, keeps costs low, and let you invest efficiently. For anyone serious about taking control of their investments, I strongly recommend IBKR for your investing journey.
